Some Advice From an Old Guy to the Younger Talent

All I can say is..."Never say Never"

For years I was just doing hip hop, and that was it. I didnt and wouldnt really do anything else, except maybe some Drum and Bass.
But that was it.

I swore I would never "sell out" and do anything else.
But times have really changed, I have started making many other genres of music and in doing so have found that its not just hip hop I like making, I actually just like to make music, whatever the genre.
My being stubborn in the past has cost me a few opportunities, and as I reflect(as you do when you get older), Im not getting any younger, and may have possibly lost my chance.

All I can say, is try and be flexible, dont limit yourself.
I put all my eggs into the "boombap hip hop" basket, but where is that now?
Its only us older generation that really clings on to the past, I still say its worth clinging onto those great days that hip hop/rap music rose to its grand heights of popularity, but stay open to new ideas.

It would also be a very good idea to try and spot new trends as they start, instead of jumping onto the bandwagon when the trend has been rinsed, (auto tune for example). Better still, try to create your own trend.(Timbaland & Neptunes for example, created a whole new unique sound which then became trends of their own, simply because of the originality of the sound).

MY KEY POINT OF THIS THREAD IS KEEP YOUR OPTIONS OPEN.

If you plan to make a business in music, have a business mind and put the ego away. Ego's kill opportunities, cloud the mind and fool you.

If this is just a hobby for you and nothing serious, then ignore all I said.
But if, for you, music is a career, then this is for you.

Great points you made. I think a big thing is people need to ask themselves are they doing it for a career, or a hobby? Once you figure that out, then move forward with common sense.

Cosign..

And even within hip-hop...expanding to subgenres is also key...especially since hiphop music nowadays is getting influenced by other genres of music....

Its never too late to be what you're meant to. Glad to see you're still growing 2G. I'd bet you're much happier with music in general now also

Either way, keep growing, it'll keep you alive

The problem a lot of people make is they are following current trends like "dub-step" or whatever. Try to make your own sound first. If it's cool, people will buy it. Take it this way, a lot of people can paint cubism like Picasso now, but he's famous because he was the first one to paint cubism. I see a lot of older guys still chasing the dream in production by making lackluster beats instead of trying to think of something different.

Also, if I was a young cat, I wouldn't try to get into the music business. It's dying from a revenue standpoint. If it's something you love-- do it. But if you want to make a living and you haven't hustled your way to a good connection, it's tough. The music business keeps contracting. You also have too much competition with other producers on the market-- due to the democratization of music through DAW technology.

My two cents.

Not to mention people are selling beats for $10.....and two for $15...

all in all, great point, but to that i must say, it also depends on your childhood days, i mean my mum was a music head, from arabic to gospel to rock funky teckno salsa even RnB.. im missing alot but i can honestly say i introduced her to HipHop Rap, and she didnt take it on board so quick but she liked it for its own style, just not the lyrics lol.
my first cd was notorious B.I.G. life after death (still on my playlist)

but what im trying to say is.. i felt in love with Music and sounds, even them 10 second adverts on tv or commercials that just catches your ears.

HipHop gave a platform for the young generation that was voiceless. to put a foot down! lol

i see hip hop right now like life...... just like the london riots... a police officer shot a innocent man, tried to cover it up with a false story.
People got real mad
But the rioters went looting instead of redemption or and act on the Feds..

im just saying, hip hop wasn't groomed right i guess.

and if anyone saying hiphop is dead, you died with it in 1990

My original goal was to be considered the best M.C. ever. Then I got hit with an 8 1/2 year bid, started taking my spirituality seriously, went to audio- engineering school, started making beats, and got married. Now I just want to make a living by creating good music, rap, producing, engineering, whatever. The spotlight is not as attractive to me as it once was. I find myself now spending hours making beats/songs. I love sample based boom bap, but I am honing my theory skills for more opportunities. Music licensing is big money, and they frown upon the sampling thing for the most part. You have to grow as an artist. Even as an M.C. I like to use Jay Z in alot of examples. Some may say he has only talked about the dope game and it's trappings. And while he does, look no further than The Throne and you can see his view expanding:

[Verse 3: Jay-Z]
Black excellence, opulence, decadence
Tuxes next to the president, I’m present
I dress in Dries and other boutique stores in Paris
In sheepskin coats, I silence the lambs
Do you know who I am, Clarice?
No cheap cologne whenever I “shh-shh”
Success never smelled so sweet
I stink of success, the new black elite
They say my Black Cardbears the mark of the beast
I repeat: my religion is the beat
My verse is like church, my Jesus piece
Now please, domino, domino
Only spot a few blacks the higher I go
What’s up to Will? Shout out to O
That ain’t enough.. we gonna need a million more
"Kick in the door" Biggie flow
I’m all dressed up with nowhere to go

[Verse 2: Jay-Z]
King Hov, I'm exactly what the fuck you think
11 in a row, Bill Russell rings
Michael Jordan swag, yall think Michael Jordan bad
Nigga I got 5 more rings than Michael Jordan had
Elvis has left the building now I'm on the Beatles ass
Niggas hear Watch the Throne, yeah it's like the Beatles back
Bey Bey my Yoko Ono, Rih Rih complete the family
Imagine how that's goin look front row at the Grammys
Fuck your awards like Eddie Murphy's couch
The Roc is in the building we should have stayed in the house
I don't even know what we doing here
Seems to me a complete waste of gear
Just a fuckin' waste of time, a complete waste of bottles
Niggas fashion is weak, they be wastin' all the models

Got the oversized Rollie let me show thee how to do it
When I say it then you see, it ain't only in the music
Basquiats, Warhols serving as my muses
My house like a museum so I see 'em when I'm peeing
Usually you have this much taste you European
That's the end of that way of thinking, nigga never again

Know when to leave when the heat is coming I learned that
This is where DeNiro would be if he ain't turn back

Fuck Sosa, this Hova this is real life
This is what the ending of Scarface should feel like

That's growth for your ass. To all my 30 plus cats still doing what they love, keep grindin . Bless, bless.
