right....from a student of films point of view.....
for me the film was shit.
The story had so many holes in it, the character werent explained properly and their progression was weak, there was no comment on why the characters did what they did.
It was aranofskys first film, and i feel he was trying too hard.
He was shoving imagary in your face, and the editing wasnt smooth and didnt aid or tell the story very well, IMO.
The montages were good at first, but got boring because each one was approached in exactly the same way.....
There is NO WAY, his mum would get that skitzed out either, (Even tho the mothers story was far and away the best)
With the guy who looses his arm: now i know A LOT of smack heads, and their is no way, they would carry on pinning into an arm that was going gangrene, NO ONE IS THAT STUPID, really they are not...
The black guy was weak and it seems his character was rushed, and did not have a cogent "back story" to back up his desires...if you wanna get rich of selling drugs, SELL COKE or CRACK
For me, they did not show the descent into being that ADDICTED at all, suddenly they went from being recreational user to full blown smack head...
Darren ARANOFSKY, IMO just wanted to shock, and he didnt do that very well either....the acting was weak on all fronts, save the mum, and as already mentioned the story wasd shit and weak.
IF you wanna see a good film about smack heads their lives and what drives them to what they do, watch the BASKETBALL DIARYs, a much more comprehensive film, showing they dangers of so called GATEWAY DRUGS, such as coke, and legal presciption drugs. THis is probally because it is a true story, told by a real life smack head....also Leo Di Caprio and Mark Wahlberg own, in that film...its drk edgy and as true to life as i could imagine, knowing and considering, some smack heads that i know are very close good friends of mine, and unfortunately having dabbled in the black arts myself....
