Question about mics,,,

Check it,,,I need a new mic, but dont know what kind I should get. Keep in mind,,I aint got that much money to spend so,,,I'm lookin for a mic that is good enough just to put vocals down then master the vocals to sound "normal"...make sense? I got my Berringer Eororack hooked into my Soundcard if that helps,,,,,Thanks for puutin up with my stupid ass questions,,,:headbang:

I've got the eurorack also and I've got a behringer B1 condensator mic.
it is not so expencive and it is a very good mic.
I paid 159 euro's for it that's about the same in dollars ( a bit more I guess).
you should check it out.
it does need phantom power.(48 volts)

Yo keep in mind you need a pre amp with condenser mics. If you want to spend a bill on a mic don't get that. You should get this check the reviews!

That is the prefered mic for your budget. If you don't have a mic pre amp you can get a cheap one like this

on ebay for like 40 bucks. You can probably also get the mic for around 80 bucks. Try it out....

Prices are on their site, very mild prices too for quality mic. No diss to the behringer users but I'm into any behringer stuff since they mostly create a budget model from an existent model from another OEM. I know it's budget stuff but in the long runn you spend money anyway, why not buy the right stuff right away.

I use a samson co1 condensor mic ( $70 usd )
Its a decent mic.
I have it pluged into a small phonic mixing board
And that's pluget directly in to my comps sound card.

Quick quetion. With my set up is a preamp necessary. The mixing board has phantom power and mic preamp.
I am about to get a Art tube mp mic pre just to get that smooth warm studio sound. But is a preamp realy necesary in my set up ?

Thats false man , pre amps don't color the sound. If you want warmth get a compressor not a preamp.

I agree and disagree, TUBE pre amps do add some warmth(color) but for better results overall, a compressor will do the trick.

Thanks guys. Hey at the risk of sounding like a newbie (cause I do have experience working @ studios) what's a good compressor that will give me that warm studio sound, especialy for a female singers vocals (a mix between alicia keys and ashanti) , for $100 or less?

You cant compare the two, pre amps stabilise output voltages, if tubed it creates a warm sound. Compressor don't add warmth ( not to be confused with expander ), its an envelope to the source dynamics being adjusted by ratio and treshold. In this case, the pre amp can be the source to be compressed whereby the tube pre amp delivers the warmth on the the mic feed.

On reply, I don't think you can get a quality comp at a $100, an alesis 3630 would be THE budget comp around that price. I use the Focusrite compounder from the Platinum series, it has an bass expander which really fattens up the signal when desired. Its not a dedicated vocal comp, but it suits very well into my setup where I mostly use it in the final mix. In your case, for some more money though, i would recommend the Vocaliser from Focusrite, also in the Platinum range.

You missed some keywords in my post, starting with " I AGREE and DIAGREE "--meaning that I agreed that a compressor would be the better choice and I disagreed to TUBE pre amps not adding warmth(color). I never compared the two but even if I did compare the two, note the keywords "for better results OVERALL".

The best compressor for your price range would be a behringer since your budget is a little low. Here is a good choice:

yeah I know, but I am more of the " save up " buy the real thing kinda dude, if you plan on doing this for a while. It all cost money and I am patient enough to wait for these items, when they mean that much to you. If you plan a budget upon the perspective of a short term saving you end up buyin budget only. For the sake of your desired quality, be patient and expand your budget. Hence me saying this over and over and over and over to anyone just starting out with sparkling future prospects commencing into buying gear. It's a maiden voyage through tonns of oem and heaps of crap in the budget range and quality isn't getting better, before you know it you've spend serious cash on budget stuff only. Just seems logical to me.
