ok! here's what i want to do.

run a shure sm58 mic through a ART TUBE MP STUDIO Microphone Preamp or the VT3 then straight to my sony laptop soundcard. tell me what you guys think?? I've been reading a lot about the art tube and the only problem that most people have been saying about it is that its pretty noisy. but i think there's ways around that. IDEAS????

by the way, ill be recording mostly vocals and maybe some guitars (acoustic/electric/bass). and doing most of it on Cool Edit.

Hey,

GET RID OF THE LAPTOP SOUNDCARD!!!!!!!! That's where you're going to get most of your noise!!!!

If you don't believe me, try this little test:

1. Unplug everything from the laptop soundcard.
2. In the Windows mixer set the Line-In as your record source.
3. In Cool Edit, hit record.

Unless you have some magical laptop, you should see the level meters flickering around -50dB, which is absolutely terrible. With nothing plugged in, my Delta 1010 has a noise floor of -90dB...

There are laptop soundcards you could look into getting...Echo makes some nice adaptors for their Layla card, it's a lot of money, but you could in theory do 8 track multitrack recording. There are also a bunch of USB and a few Firewire cards out there, they look very nice.

Take care,

Nick
