Hey, total noob here. I want to start making some beats and stuff on the computer. I downloaded the demos of Reason and FL Studio, and did a bunch of research on both. They both seem to be good products, but I'm leaning towards FL for the versatility and seeming ease of use. Any other advice here? The main downside of FL seems to be the lack of built-in sounds. Reason includes like 3GB of built-in sounds, and FL has almost nothing. Where do you guys get most of your sounds from, such as drums and stuff like that? FL supports VST, and I've seen people say that Battery and Kontakt are good VST plugins for FL. Say I get Battery... does that get me a whole bunch of new drum sounds for FL? Or should I get something else? Just a bit confused about that.

Also been reading through these forums and getting some good ideas about sampling. Why does everyone get their samples off vinyl? Why not CD? And how do you get vinyl into the computer?

Anyway, I plan to do a lot of work getting up to speed on this stuff and start making beats. Thanks for any help...

both, reason and fl are very good products, but i couldn't tell you which one is better, cause i dont know what your work flow is like or how u learn. but for me needs i like reason better.

as far as getting viynl into the computer, you need a soundcard, with 2 ins or more, a turn table, and then maybe a dj mixer. from there you just record into a recording program.

also if you want to sample cds that's cool, but most people, including my self like the sound and character that viynl has. but it's all a matter of preferences

dawg go with reason, many cats here started with fruityloops and later converted to reason and never looked back. (trust me) you wont be disappointed. you can also find more sounds for reason from a number of sources in files called refills. Reason, Reason, Reason.

more than likely you'll be given advice like "get what works for you" or "its not the program its how you use it", but get reason!!

If you're a total Newb, Fruity Loops is the way to go. Its way easier to learn imo. But again, the thing is, Reason gives more sounds to begin with and it reproduces what hardware beatmakers work with...

It's all up to you, really. On the other hand, if you want sounds, there is a thread that's got a shitload of them... (do a search)

You can also go to www.kvraudio.com to look for generators (VSTi = VSTintruments and DXi = DXinstruments)

have fun
