A break i my opinion is when you take away or add elements to the beat but just at singular points. Just perhaps take away the drums for a bar or summink like that.

- Breakbeat: First identified in the early '70s. Refers to the part of a funk (or jazz) song in which the music breaks to make room for the rhythm section only. Hip-hop DJs (starting with Kool Herc) began using several song breaks in a row, which is how hip-hop and breakbeat came into being.

A break could refer to any sampled loop. But you usually refer to a drum loop or a groove loop, or a drum-groove break for that matter :p
