Hey,
On the side I do networking and had come across a problem with some of the machines I service, wanted to share this with you guys.
There is a 'worm' on the internet (sort of like a virus) which is causing all sorts of problems with computers, especially home computers which may not have the best level of security.
This particular worm has found a hole in Windows XP; it enters the hole, finds a nice little home in your Windows/System32 folder, and does all sorts of crazy stuff like kick you off the internet and reboot your machine. When it reboots your machine, it first pops up a Window telling you that 'such and such has failed and you will reboot in 60 seconds'.
You can read more information about it here:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/tr...=/technet/security/virus/alerts/msblaster.asp
You can see if you have this worm by doing a search for 'msblast.exe' on your computer. At the moment there doesn't appear to be any sort of fix for computers already infected except to wipe the drive and reinstall Windows...there is a patch however available for machines not yet infected.
If you don't yet have the worm on your machine, there are a few things you can do to prevent it:
1. Run the security patch found here:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/treeview/default.asp?url=/technet/security/bulletin/ms03-026.asp
2. Enable the Connection Firewall in XP, you can read more here:
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=283673
Take care,
Nick
