my question is actually about midi routing (sorry)


ok so here is my set up: fantom x, access virus C (rackmount), logic pro.
my goal: to best integrate them for the best/most efficient workflow possible. if that means sequencing on the fantom or logic, i dont really care.

this is how it's set up now: i'm sequencing on my fantom and running the midi from it into my virus...then i have the audio outs running into my mixer and then finally my interface. i'll usually band something out on my fantom and virus (maybe not...depending on how lazy i feel). then i usually just record the beat into logic through the mixer and add sounds from logic if i feel like it.
recently though, ive found that i get better sound quality by resampling the beat and exporting the file from the fantom directly to my computer...which means i would have to do the virus stuff seperately (at least i think thats true).

what i want to do is have a central brain to this setup and be able to use all the gear/software at once...or basically to streamline my workflow if that makes any sense...

any help at all/suggestions would be great...

Ok man here is my spin on your situation...after doing many and i stress many different midi configs trying to integrate gear and software, really is a process you have to painstakingly sometimes explore...because as you know with 3 or 4 combinations of anything you get numerous possiblities for a setup........

My first question is which sequencer out of the ones that you have do you find you are the most proficient with (logic or fantom)???

Then with that start working your setup from there.....

I am sure you gonna get a ton more input...

but if it was me this is how I would do it....

I would use logic to do all of my sequencing......
that way it you can multitrack everything but most of the time your sound export is always gonna be cleaner but you could always keep doing that but I would just keep experimenting with my mixing and record using your audio inputs or SPDIF until you find the sweet spot for your setup man....
Then take a few days or weeks finding what works best for you....

Fantom sequncer sucks IMO, i dont know much about logic but i have heard good things, i have worked with the fantom here and there and i was NOT feeling the sequncer

I'd get into logic and hook up all midi on that one and use it for recording, much more practical in the end ( when u get comfortable with logic, learn about screensets, that's all I can say hehe ). You can still use the sequencer on the fantom but I'd cancel out any other sequencer in my set unless its an mpc or x0x, slaved to logic. You can also turn the lot around, hook up the virus with logic and slave the pc to the fantom. In that way the fantom is the controller in transport and recording your whole setup although i might suggest having another midi controller for the pc, just for plain convenience. Again, I'd hook everything up with logic though and screw the fantom seq ( imo, sell it get a rack version ), the best is multitrack setup with logic in that you can record the required 8, 16 or more chnls in pre-pro and then routing all the edited chnls back to the board for the proper analogue mixdown, with a 2 track back into logic again.

ive been digging through the manual and the fantomized forums but i cant find info on this...(maybe i am but its just not clear)

the usb midi function...does that just enable me to use the fantom as a midi controller or does it also allow me to sequence the fantom on multiple channels from something like logic? ( this seems like a stupid question to me but i cant find anything that sets this out explicitly)

I dont own a fantom or really know of its specs, but I assume the USB is there for sample transfer and for pc interfacing as a stand alone workstation. For a hook up with logic you'll only use the midi I/O. This goes for either as a midi controller or as a device controlled by logic thru midi.

hmm...well i know for sure that you can exchange midi messages with your computer from the fantom im just not sure how far you can take that...oh well ill just try it when i got like a day to myself and see whats up...
