Industry Tricks.
Could this be a true story?
I love the site, Fade is great. Here's a little story. Tell me if you think this is wrong or right. I think I will start an "Industry Tricks" thread. There are so many little tricks like these. Mr. Newbie needs to watch out when stepping in to the arena. Here's an example.
Let's say, Mr. Newbie, that you're drinking at the SkyBar high above the Sunset Strip overlooking the shite that is Los Angeles nearing the end of your lunch break. Say hi to the shite "The Standard" guests (remember that the writing is upside down on the hotel, people) and you think you're "in" with the in crowd. My goodness, you've jolly one upped yourself. You were a nobody in secondary school, and now you are in a different part of the world working in one of the most glamorous businesses there are.
Then a phone call on the celly. It's somebody at a hospital saying that your best friend was injured in a car crash and desperately needs you. You are bit out of it, but oblige.
Your best friend is in critical condition and she needs you, that's what the nurse on the phone said. You call back at Shiteface Records, the company you work for, and say that your friend has been in a car crash, and you need to get to the hospital. You can't make the meeting. Lorrie understands, she's the secretary, and will relay the information to your uppers.
In any case, you are panicked. You've been given the room number and everything regarding the situation. Somehow, you don't call your best friend's other friends, or her family. Hmmm... But you trudge on.
You get to the hospital, and go straight for the receptionist's desk, and say that you are seeing your best friend. You have the room number and everything. This whole ordeal, with traffic, takes you about 1-2 hours, since you took lunch a bit late and the LA traffic is picking up. But, you're there at the hospital.
You're at the hospital, but your friend isn't. What's going on?
You missed your A&R meeting. You know, the one that you had to present the artist you represent at the meeting with the label boss. You know, the one that allocates which act basically receives promotion funding for the quarter.
You are astonished at what is going on, you still haven't picked up on the dupe. You rush and say "there has to be so and so at this room number." After wasting about another hour, you are astounded. You call up your best friend. There's a message, or perhaps she picks up. Either way, you find out that somebody tricked you.
Yes, you are a youngblood, and you are new to the world of the record company morals. You were cocky and arrogant because you are an A&R rep. A slap to you, my friend.
Whenever there was a new rep, it would be easy, if you can analyse them, to dupe them this way. It is wrong and DO NOT DO SUCH THINGS. Obviously, I haven't, I am a moral being guiding individuals through example, (cough). But stuff like this happens.
You have now missed the meeting. Try getting a solo meeting with the label boss. It won't happen, either he's somewhere in another part of the country next week, or your enemies in A&R have set up their "favours" network to make sure that you will not get a meeting.
The favours network may mean that your enemy, has bought a spa vacation for the boss' secretary, with specific instructions to disallow you a meeting.
That is why a good relationship with all secretaries is necessary. They are key. Don't get them angry at you.
So, you've pretty much been tricked out of the promotion money for the hot new rap group you signed called "Pee-Unit." Your enemy, who has a similar rapper called "50Pence" has duped you out of your money. Ooh, your enemy makes you mad, Mr. Newbie.
You're angry, but that's the way the game works. Next time you have a meeting for budget allocation, don't miss it for the world, unless you REALLY REALLY REALLY know what is happening. But Los Angeles, New York, or London has enough starving actors willing to make a dollar/pound/euro on a fake call if paid. It happens.
Just a little story to humour up the day.
Sincerely,
God
DON'T DO THIS. IT IS WRONG. I DISCLAIM AND DO NOT CONDONE SUCH ACTIONS.
