I use a VS-1680 and the only reason why is b/c Roland has some killer ass effects also i dont have to worry much about freeze ups, viruses, ect.. Also i dont have to worry about speed either. But one thing I do have to worry about is storage. But its really up to you though cause u can still get good mixes from either one. But with software u can get so much effects and shit for free as with a track recorder (the one I have) u have to pay for effect cards and shit. So its up to what u think will work for you. Also I love the hands on with the faders and shit. But if u think about it even if u use a track recorder u may still find yourself using a computer. I use the computer for editing if I cant get it like i need to on da VS and I also use it for making an audio cd since I dont have a cd burner.(too expensive and my computer works jus find). But all the mixing is done in da VS and then recorded to Cakewalk or Cool Edit to be put on a cd.

yes the knobs and faders and it really forces you to be creative wtih the effects. You only get 2 to 4 with those, but remember college dropout was recorded on a 1680 so you know what it is capable of. I got a 20 gig on mine which is pleny of space and everything can be archived when you don't use it anymore. I like it more than CPU even though you do lose more effects power and big screen functions.

thats cool , u can get that real time hands on shit wit software with a hardware controller too, like the digi oo2 or sum shit pro tools has, but um. i heard sum shit recorded with hard disk and they sound real nice . ill prolly buy one sum day if i got money play wit, im gunna make sure it has an internal burner to avoide having to reprocess the audio thru a soundcard and get a diffrent sound. like u said the editting would be harder on a hard dick but. to me, the kind of hip hop i make and the people that rap over my shit is uncut uneditted shit anyway i dont thin kthatd be much of a problem. i wish i had one right now so i could fuck around wit it, thats one of the things guitar center should look into doin, hookin up the hard disks to sum mics and drum machines so people can demo them, those things are never hooked up to anything or ever even powered up. theyre jsut kinda there and all u can really do is look at em and wonder

depending on what kind of hard disk recorder you get, the editing could be as easy as software. like these ones from roland, you can hook up a pc monitor to them and it gives a software interface, so its easy to copy, cut, paste. plus you can use vst ex plugins still.

Struggles of Dad - by OldBones - due Dec 2016
Old thread but I recently sold my old Akai DPS12i and kinda regret it...

I use Maschine and mix in S1-Pro but when I get too 'mixdown/post-production' I miss the 'hands on' vibe I get in the the 'making/production' stage with Maschine...

I've been considering a couple of (budget) options and their both pretty retro (or antiquated)...
1) Korg's D888 - This gives a surprising amount of i/o options (inc usb file transfer) for an older digi-HDR including an in-line mixer with 8ins/8outs... But only accepts 16bit wav files...
2) Tascam's 688 midistudio... Cassette 8-Track! Nice mixer... Tape-Outs... But will most likely require regular servicing and pretty expensive...
