Hey, I know theres a few guitar players on here. Ive been playing acoustic guitar for bout 4 months now so have some of the basics down but i now looking into getting an electric guitar to incorpoate into my setup, Ive tried to do some reading up to get some ideas on makes/models but to be honest im lost. my budget is about $400 and am looking at getting it new. Ive got a mixer and some monitors, would that be ok instead of an amp? I hope this is in the rite section. Any help with regards to what would be a good option would be greatly appreciated.

I have an acoustic Ibanez PF5ECE that sounds beautiful. I bought it at guitar center for 299.00 and it was the best sounding acoustic for the 200-500 price range that I heard.

I also use Guitar Rig 3 and I can easily make it sound like the dirtiest electric out there. If only guitar rig 3 didn't use up so many computer resources. ::edit::(I just found out that the rtas Analog Factory was using all of my system resources, not Guitar Rig 3)

The guitar features a "Fishman Sonicore pickup SST preamp w/ onboard tuner" with a three band equalizer.

Ye, i was looking at a particular ibanez in a shop and when i went back the next day i got a different sales assistant and he told me to stay clear of them. Im just back in ireland now and because everything is so expensive here il be getn it on the internet so i dont get much chance to try things out. I reading about the line pod, i know they offer effects but would it enhance the sound going from the guitar to the speakers, at hte moment i could definatly do without any effects while i learn the instrument alot better. DO u have any advice on particular models in the ibanez range, there just seems to be so much choice out there which i guess is either a gud thing or a bad thing. Thanx for the help.

Chrono, just saw your post now. That looks like a gud idea to have an acoustic guitar with the quater inch jack. Do u just use your computer for effects?

yes, i use pro tools 7.4 with mucho rtas plugins. Guitar Rig 3 though is the main one because it is so comprehensive, but it does use many computer resources. It really is the best of both worlds! Then I bought a crappy little electric from ebay for 60 bucks (which i immediately had to buy new strings for :). I have a long cord for the electric and practice fingering while watching a movie or whatever. I like having a cheap electric because the aoustic is too bulky to lay down with. for your price range you could get both like i have :)

please read the reviews for this Ibanez! If you need any more help at all then please let me know and if your interested we can do some postal app trading, on the d/l of course :)

p.s. Ema what type of environment are you planning on using this in? live stage? and also what software are you familiar with or that you own?

That computer set up sounds gud. I already have a cheap acoustic guitar which sounds pretty similar to a toy banjo :) thats y im looking into upgrading and thought that i might aswell go for an electric so ican have the best of both worlds. At the moment im starting to be less interested in the computer end of music and im starting to become interestid in learning instruments for example i just started drums a few months back aswell, so for the next while im not that interested in integrating the guitar into my setup (ie MPC etc), but i will at a later stage when i get my skills up to par at the moment im really looking into a guitar that will sound nice on its own, without any effects etc. On of my big problems is, im jst looking around on thomann (similar to guitar cantre) and there all indifferent sections like ST, T SG, LP, semi acoustic, and to be honest i really dont know the diffenerence. This may soun like a v stupid question to a seasoned player but im seeing alot of talk about pickups and there importance, what exactly are they. I hope im not overloading you with questions, i really appreciate this help cus with a bit of luck id like to order it b4 christmas.

sounds nice, I respect the interest in instruments. I must admit though I am not a seasoned player at all. I bought my acoustic a year ago and still have much serious practice to go, i am definetly a newbie :). I wish I could help you with the question on the pickups although I do know that fishman is a respected company for pickups.

I would advise you to research as much as you can and talk with the people at your music store over the phone, because I know you live very far away, or if it's long distance then just use the internet. Personally I love researching so I can get the best for my price.

I hope this helps. You know as expensive as music instruments are it is very easy to undermine your future by purchasing an expensive product that you do not use every feature from that also keeps you from more important products you should have. I once bought a korg electribe I am so glad I was able to sell to a good friend without losing much.

I even have an MPC1000 that I make my drums and freak samples on but for the price I could probably do without it honestly. I got it for 600 and do use it often but purchasing pro tools was a great buy for me. I can sequence everything into it. I also have a KSM-27 microphone so I can buy crappy flutes and what not and sequence them. Pro Tools requires you to have a specific audio interface so keep that in mind. If you have an Apple computer I would suggest looking into Logic. The future really is software. Some of these plugins do whatever you need for much less from hardware.

Also, feel free to load me down with questions and I will answer the ones that I can.

p.s. I have used reason before and that may honestly be all you need. If you have more questions on reason we can hustle up one of the heavy reason users up here on the ill I know there are many! :) Take Care

Are you doing hip-hop music? I have played and taught guitar for 15 years. If you need a guitar for metal get an ibanez, for funk grab a strat. A PRS is always a good choice for a range of tones. Check out http://www.sweetwater.com/c590--Solid_Body_Guitars/low2high/pn6

BTW Guitar rig is ok but nothing beats a real amp, Digidesign eleven is the best so far, but I would grab a Marshall or Laney any day.

I totally agree with TDP.

I'm old school. I always prefer to mic the amp with electric guitars. Each amp has it's own characteristics and sounds. That's why pro's have mad racks. Just like different guitars have different sounds.

When I'm just screwin around a lil bit, I'll plug the axe into the board, but not for recording.

IMO grab the amp.

Also, very rarely do you buy your last guitar the first time. Grab somethin cheap for now. We're not at Abbey Road. That way, as your skills increase, you'll understand why all those things you've heard metioned about pick-ups, and different types of guitars are mentioned, and how they will benefit you. Just my opinion.

The first time I heard about an F# key on the sax, I thought, hey that's cool. But I didn't know the importance of having that key until I was a more advanced player, and found that my horn was lacking that function and why it was important to have.

P.S. anbody know what a double-bifurcated sploshing flange is? lol
