This question is for any industry heads that might know the answer

I've bought albums and read in the liner notes "A portion of the proceeds go to xyz charity". How do you go about doing that? What level is responsible? Is it your record label or is it the store you stock your cd's in? Or does the group just siphon off the loot they get into a charity?

any help would be good on this.

Thanks.

Usually it's done by the artists management but not always...it could be an agreement with the label, it could be with the retailer...it just depends on who is initiating the donations. i.e. Alot of artist are selling their stuff exclusively to wal-mart ( because wal-mart has got the retail business on lock ), wal-mart makes ALOT of donations to charitable companies like The Childrens Miracle Network and as a part of the agreement to going exclusive to wal-mart it could be in the contract that wal-mart will give a percentage of its profit to CMN. Then again, the artist could have a favorite charity org.
