buying an MPC 2000 XL off eBay question - (note variation slide)

a friend from another state here in australia is selling his MPC 2000XL with a free extras on eBay but has noted that the NOTE VARITION SLIDER IS NOT WORKING. he says in brakcets that you dont relly need it anyway, i was wonderin if anyone could tell me what the note variation slider actually does.

Well it helps control a variety of dynamics like decay or filter values in realtime, tunning and whatnot and I would argue that you DO need it.

However, as I think about it, its prolly not something dire to the functioning of the unit as a whole Id say, but at least on my 2500 Id be pissed not to have it.
Im thinking you could prolly just use the 16 levels function instead if you must.
