    Earnings of a Sound Engineer

Havent been on here in a minute. Just checked a few threads. As mostly everyone already said it varies. Some make good money, and others dont make shit. You basically work freelance, so if you're booked everyday, you make great money. I havent had a day off in weeks, so I'm one of the...

    im really curious

The amended version is, I've been making music since high school. Loved it. Decided this is what I want to do with my life. Went to Full Sail. Graduated top of my class. Moved to NYC. Landed an internship with Duro. Worked insane hours, hustled my ass off, never knew the word no. 3 years...

    Studio Sound Engineer

Just saw this thread, thought I should add my 2 cents.... I work as an engineer. That's my main profession, although I produce and DJ as well. As far as my clients, right now I'm recording Fabolous' new album, but over the past 3 years I've worked with just about everyone. Kanye...

    im really curious

Music is my only job. Engineering pay's my bills, and I'm able to live in my own apartment with no roommate in Manhattan, which ain't cheap. Production is an additional outlet. The great thing about music is you can have multiple income streams. You essentially work for yourself so there's...

paging GOD, SHADEED, i got contacted on myspace about my work

the $450 is the deal breaker. Any manager who approaches you, means they want you. In ALL cases they would pay the lawyer themselves. The idea is, they handle your music and deals, and you pay them the 15-20% on your production fees. Anything more than that is a deal breaker

whats a good percentage amount for royalties n stuff

is the artist on a label already? To be honest, you dont have to do any contract shit. If the artist is signed the label is gonna give you the contract to sign. You should have a lawyer read it, but you wont have to draft anything. Also, since you're not a big producer, the business on the...

How to make that sound when the record stops

The way all producers/engineers achieve that is by using a plugin called "Vari-Fi" The plugin comes in a bundle with Recti-Fi, Lo-Fi, and Sci-Fi. All useful plugins in their own right. Look it up. digidesign makes it. It only has 2 options, slow down, and speed up. You highlight the...

    Full sail

I can definitely see your viewpoint, and it makes sense to many ppl. But for me, I didnt want a fall back plan. Music was my only option, because its the only thing I want to wake up every morning doing. So my personal happiness outweighed the risks. But having said that, I still have bills...

    Full sail

Did you go? I am an engineer, so talk to me lol. I will tell you, if you ever expect to get into a real studio, or working with one of the top engineers, you will have a better shot with an audio engineering degree. Not to say you have to go to Full Sail, quite the contrary. BUT, the...

    Full sail

I went to Full Sail, graduated top of my class, and i do pretty well for myself now. I honestly have no complaints whatsoever about the school. Worth the money in my opinion. The key is, when u graduate, don't expect to be hand fed a job. You still need to go out and hustle and make...

    Who controls the session?

Of course its a team effort, but experience generally takes precedence. If you're a brand new producer working with a seasoned MC, the MC will probably make most of the calls. And vice versa if you're working with a producer like Pharrell, or Dre etc. Then you have situations where the artist...

    Ghostface's New Album

I actually worked on the mixes for 10 songs on this album with Duro...def a dope album!! The song with chrisette Michelle is my favorite. And on White Linen Affair, if you listen close you can hear my voice in the intro. Saying something about letting Ja Rule, Missy, and Tru Life into the...

Finally finished workin on Jay-Z album

What's good my people. So yesterday we finally finished mixing the last few records on the new Jay-Z album American Gangster. Ended up mixing 6 songs and I recorded a few as well. The album is pretty dope, and a think a lot of the Ill will like it. Very throwback as far as hip hop's...

    Is This True?

Definitely. You have to maintain a good gain structure when mixing a record. I usually start with my kicks at -10db, and by the time the rest of the music is in with vocals the song is sitting at -5 or so. It's easy to raise the volume after, but its hard to lower the volume after it's maxed...
