    What WAS your typical setup?

Man, I have no real reason to buy one, but I'd love to have an SR-16

    What WAS your typical setup?

Oh man!!! My FIRST ever setup (which is a stretch of the term) circa 2001/2002 was: Adobe Cool Edit Pro (2.0 I think?) Yamaha YES Keyboard A clip on Microphone French/English dictionary The YES line stood for (Yamaha Education System) and had a little Tiger Gaming esque screen that showed...

    SHOWCASE: November 17-24, 2024

Between work and travel; I've been in something of a creative rut. I find writers block is always a good time to do some "studies" and explore the minute details of music you like in the hopes you A) learn something B) get inspired. So, I decided to listen to some older Neptunes music and took...

@DJ Excellence Very cool ambient vibes going on here with the beat. Drums match the flow/rhythm of the lyrics. While I find you remixes do a great job of matching the overal vibe of the original track, I thought this one was a tad bit off the mark...until the chorus. Well mixed, interesting...

@DJ Excellence Another great remix. Again, matching the vibe nicely. The drums and flow of the vocals fit perfectly! Simple beat, but the drum variations and spacing of sample chops is great. I would have liked to hear a bit more energy during the chorus, but that's a nit-pick.

Thanks for the suggestions @K-waz As mentioned, I don't listen to (nor I particularly care for) Trap/Drill. This was really just a personal challenge and a study into the genre. In fact, I find the gliding 808 bass-lines very annoying. But, I did have fun working through this one.

So I tried to make a "Trap/Drill" beat... ...Admittedly I'm not a particular fan of trap and thought it would be a good way to challenge myself. Through the process I realized making these styles of beats is actually quite a lot of fun. Also, it's not as easy at it seems. Working at 140 BPM...

@PSYCH0 The drums are cool and I like the processing on the vocal chops. The vibe is grimey and dark which I like. That pumping pad sound takes up a lot of the sonic space and I feel like it makes the mix a bit muddy. It's a work in progres, so I'm curious to see how the final product shapes...

@MA-Beatz Cool sample and great bounce. The vocals really help accentuate the overall groove of the beat. My only critique is that it sounds a bit disjointed. It's either the hook or breakdown section of a full song. Mix could use a bit of work, but doesn't take away from the listening...

Thanks for the feedback @Fyyn3stSymphoni That dip in volume is a filter sweep, specifically a hi-cut. It's my default move when I can't think of transitions or B-sections. This beat definitely did take some work, and I had to step away from it for a few days to approach the mix and arrangement...

@TjombaBeats First impressions - I like the dark/creepy vibe. The industrial type drums really suit the track. The slight asymmetry and groove was well done. In fact, the over all sound selection is very cohesive and work together to creating and elevating that dark aesthetic. That grainy...

@DJ Excellence You Canadian?!? I really like this beat. Laid back, chill, jazzy style beats are always my favourite. Super smooth!

Here's another beat I started on the MPC 1000. Started with getting a simple drum groove going then sampled little lines in using Kontakt instruments. This (as the date suggests) took me a while to get to a point I was happy with, particularly: Drums Original snares didn't have enough crack...

@Memento Beats I like the synth intro. It's crazy how much dynamics you can add to a song just by opening and closing a filter. Sounds like you layered the intro synth during the verse which adds a lot weight. The start and stop would definitely sound good with someone rapping over it. Trap...

    Sole Element “Not Repeating Myself”

I like the old school style flow over a newer generation type of beat. That being said, there's still a lot of old-school jazzy feel in the beat, while also sounding modern. I'm usually a fan of asymmetric drums, but with lyrics, slightly more straight forward may give a better rhythmic...

LL Cool J ft Sona Jobarteh 'Black Code Suite' (DJ Excellence remix)

Tone and vibe of the beat matches the flow and lyrical content. I find a lot of remixes miss the importance of matching vibes. I really like the use of percussion. It gives the rhythm section a bit more depth and atmosphere. Not sure if it's my headphones, but there seems to be a bit mod...

Any ATLiens? Where the Playaz Ball - Nzyte | Life in ATL Unfiltered

I typically don't care for Trap drums - but the way you used them with the musical elements is very well done. sound selection is great. Tremelo guitars always give instant vibes for me. I especially liked the smaller discrete touches - like the descending piano lines. Easy to miss at first...

Beat with Hook - Can't Look Down

Can't Look Down: Sound selection is great. All the elements work well with each other and work to elevate each section. What I think you did really well here is the arrangement. Transitions from each section to the other makes sense, and flows nicely. The choices around where to bring in or...
