Congrats @iDeaLoGiK Dope beat, a worthy winner.
@M.I.ndless had my vote. Really liked @PhxAzTracmaster submission too, I was torn between those, but neither placed. The first runner up has a distorted kick which has thrown me a bit.
But it is what it is, congrats to everybody, was a tough battle.

@hosie stop giving yourself a hard time bro, you don't deserve it.
@BiggChev really like your beat too

Glad I voted earlier in the day as I've just sat down to make some music and bang the results are in!

@2GooD Productions Thank you for the kind words bro. Appreciated as always!

Congrats to the man in the land of the sand @iDeaLoGiK who came with the fighting talk and delivered like a legend. Nice one dude! Beat is dope, great mix too.

Beats are even nicer on the old headphones now I listen again properly...

@oninkaf dude, absolutely loving that beat of yours! I believe that got my vote in the end!

Maaaan, did anyone put @Delta Skeltah's beat up LOOOOOUUUUUD? Absolute groove. That bass, that lofi sizzle, that vocal chop up. Dope!

Even just on the phone I feel like I can quickly recognise the distinct sounds and mixes of @2GooD Productions and @Earsblower . Had downloaded both beats to give another listen before voting. Dope beats and mixes are immaculate.

@BiggChev this was your different direction? I liked the drums but wasn't as keen on the sample / instrumentation. More a personal preference thing cause it was executed perfectly.

Special shouts to @thekoolkrush @V.J. Retro & @M.I.ndless who had dope beats. @Wesbeats another beat that needed turned way up but sounded dope once it was. Had to turn my volume to near oblivion to get that snare slapping.

Congrats @iDeaLoGiK - This beat has a sick groove! The small little drum variations, fills, and transitions from one section to the next were super smooth and seamless. I particular like the two horn phrases in the back half. I think the mix on this was very well done too. I had to listen back a few times to really pick up on all the elements (rhodes, orgran? some mallet type sound) and how well they're placed to both fill out the sound and compliment each other.

@prodCardellino - really liked the energy you establish right from the start. This is a great sample choice and the main phrases work well as compliments to each other. Two points of critique are the distorted kick and the drum fill. The kick is really aggressive and stands and out too much. I think there are 2 parts where a drum fill feels just an 8th or 16th beat off.

@hosie - Pure fire! I especially liked the drums on this. 90s boombap can have a tendency to sound a bit dark, but you really brightened this up with the hats/shakers. Add in the nice swung kick and snare/clap combo - pure groove! The vocal chops really fit the vibe of this track. Even though there are no other vocals, this beat still tells a story. Your ability to tap into that 90s sound a vibe is second to none man. Listening to this was like stepping into a time machine. Really dope!

@oninkaf - CMMD+C/V basically everything I said about Hosie's drums. Love that old school heavy swung kick roll. The syncopated rhodes/e-piano are very subtle but do a lot to add to the beat. Of course, you can never go wrong with Big L vocal chops. very dope!

@2GooD Productions - Love the dark and gloomy vibe. The vocals that come in around 0:51 are absolutely fucking haunting! Everything fits together very nicely...maybe a bit too well? Given the tone and theme of this beat, it's maybe the one time where some downsampling/aliasing, slightly janky sample chops would actually work to enhance the vibe. I don't want to say "overproduced" but maybe a bit too clean. Either way, still a really dope beat. Sounds like the bass is doubled with piano?

@Armani - Big Chronic 2001/Eminem Show vibes from this. The first thing I thought when I heard it was "Square Dance." I really like how the strings and clav sound really start building tension around the 0:43 mark. This is another really well composed and produced track. I was hoping for a big, grand, epic pay-off that didn't happen. The way this beat keeps leaning forward, the tension and energy built with the strings and piano, it definitely need a huge finish in my opinion,

@Bandia Gotach - I may be taking completely out to lunch, but do you have some sort of classical music background? The way that high piano sits so nicely over the strings around 0:44 suggest you. Speaking of those strings. I like the attention to detail there. The slight differences in velocity do a lot to add a rhythmic value. Sound selection maybe isn't my favourite. I typically like the blend of synths and acoustic elements but the synths weren't quite my cup of tea. Again though, you brought the atmosphere.

@BEATBRAWLER - you weren't playing when you said you had a heavy metal trap beat! There are some really dope things going on in this beat, but are being over-shadowed by the mix/sound selection. Example, I really like the crash cymbals but they kinda stick out and feel out of place. Some reverb could work to have them blend in a bit more. The tone of the kick fits with the heavy metal sound, but it's fighting the guitars for space. Some strategic EQ, especially on such a thick sound like the guitars, could really help the kick tuck nicely into the mix. Some side-chain compression could also help move the gutiars out of the way a bit. That descending ratcheting snare really fits the sound of this beat, but again the mix doesn't allow it to fit in nicely. What I do like is the sample selection and the chops on them. I would definitely love to see your revisit this beat.

@CalvinCoolidge - You did something really cool with the drums. They sound live right up until the hi-hat "stutter" towards the end of the loop. The piano chops sound great. The main through-line got a bit tiring however. It's not bad, but I think I would prefer if maybe you flipped the hierarchy of sounds (with the piano as the star and the organ sounding line as interjections). I think, at least in a battle context, this didn't flip into a second gear. With a 2 min time limit it's either you start hot or get there quickly.

@Delta Skeltah - Cool groovy beat! There was something about this beat that I couldn't quite put my finger on, and took me a several listens...but I think there is a key modulation between the "You know" and "hold on your check" and the "ba-dum" section with the organ vamp. In fact, I think the "ba-dum" is an entirely different sample. Which leads me to believe you were really fighting the sample to get them to fit, hence some pitching around and stretching, ultimately leading to what sounds like a key modulation. While the beat is really cool and the samples are great - it didn't flow smooth as other stuff I've heard from you. It sounds like 3 different pieces kinda stuck together.

@Earsblower - This is a personal favourite of mine. The live house band feel of this is amazing. In fact, that's why I didn't vote for it. As groovy, natural, and jazzy as this beat is, it really felt more like being at a jazz bar and watching a band play rather than a "beat." Conversely, I imagine with a chill emcee with a soulful voice and a smooth flow, this is quality album cut. I love all the elements of this track. the Wurlitzer/E-piano, subtle horns in the back and especially the drums. Mix is great. Very well done!

@KomeKie - Keep working on it! Compared to the first beat you posted on Illmuzik, there are definitely improvements. I like the flamenco guitar sample and pairing it with trap style drums is a cool creative decision. Continue working on your mixes, and getting more fluent with your gear/tools. As you do, you'll be able to translate ideas from your head into the music you want to make. Respects for jumping into battles right away!

@LetItRunAli - Really nice sample choice! The way you chopped it took me right back to the mid 2000s. My only critique is the levels and mix. The drums are not prominent enough for my taste. Add in a B-section and get the drums knocking harder and you have a really dope beat on your hands here.

@M.I.ndless - This got my vote! Fucking love the horns on this! Don't take my lack of feedback as a slight...but I don't think there's much to be said. This is fucking dope.

@PhxAzTracmaster - Can we setup a video call sometime? I really want to pick your brain about how you approach melody. I love how this climbs and builds tension. I like that falling sound at 0:30. It's soo subtle but does a lot to add to the atmosphere that you develop early on. I get what you're saying about it sounds like several people collab'd on this. Personally, I prefer the first section. Cool track, glad you're back making new music.

@RJM - Funky AF! The bass and drums are so tight. Growing up, my mum was always playing disco and MoTown, so this beat resonates with me. Lots of cool little details that all add up for an incredibly groovy beat. The filtering, disco string chops, all dope. Very minor critique, the transition into the big horns section around 1:00 is a bit abrupt. Otherwise, very nice!

@TCoast - This gave me early G-Unit mixtape vibes - maybe it's the piano. I like this dark grimy sound. Some variation to the beat and a louder mix would help it. And I could be tripping, but the bass sounds like it's a touch out of key in some spots. I definitely think this one is worth going back to and building out the arrangement. Adding some more elements, polishing up the mix, and even a small breakdown or b-section, and you have a banger here.

@thekoolkrush - Banger! I feel like this could've been on The Black Album or the intro to Blueprint. I really like the drums on this one. Simple, but they don't need to be any busier. This is a good example of the drums serving the beat as a whole. I enjoyed the extended outro too. The way it kinda shows off the rest of the sample was a nice touch. This is really good!

@V.J. Retro - The only thing I would change about this is the 8-Bit sounding bit. I kinda get what you may have been going for with it, as this has heavy 80s vibes to me. The bass line is super funky. While I do like the scratching it's a bit over powering in the mix. Regardless, you did a great job capturing that 80s sound.

@Wesbeats - I'll probably sound like a jerk, becasue on the last beat I said it was too loud and clipping...but this one is a bit too quiet lol. There's something cool going on here, but I just can't hear. I'd like to see you; normalize the sample, bring up the mix, add a limiter or something to bring up the quieter parts and re-post this in the Showcase.

@WHAT1000 - I like the bell/mallet part and that kinda of rolling techno bass line. I think some more focus on sound selection and developing your main melodies will help to get more complete and beats. Compared to previous stuff you've posted, sounds like you're working on song structure and arrangement. It's showing!

@hosie - Listening back, I guess it wasn't too far out of my wheel house. I made an effort to not use guitar on this lol. As for the instrumentation, that was also part of the decision to abstain from having guitars be the focal point. Appreciate the feedback as always!

I noticed some newer members in the battle this week. Big shoutout to those who recently joined and jumped right into the battles. Takes some serious stones. There was a ton of great music in this 'Beat This.' There's a lot of talent on The Ill!
